The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Beyond wonderful, "The Book Thief" is the intense beautifully written story of foster child Liesl growing up in Nazi Germany in 1939. Death is the narrator. He tells her story with the wisdom of the ages and the worldview of a cynic. The title? Liesl, who has very little, steals books when she has the opportunity, learns to read and uses her skill to make friends and lend comfort during a very difficult time in history.
I loved it.
